Shadow Temperament was written for Evan Leffert while attending SPLICE in summer 2017. The vibraphone is divided according to range and two different processes are applied. The lowest octave of the vibraphone is subjected to frequency modulation, which creates sidebands, supplying unique tunings for the upper part, which is delayed according to pitch and detuned to match the frequency sideband from which it is derived. The result is a micro-tonal "shadow" that follows the vibraphone and conflicts with its equal temperament.
