Running Blindfolded (7' 30'')

Solo Double Bass

Premiered: May 2009 by Kyle Grimm; Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA

Inspired by "Valentine" by Jacob Druckman, "Running Blindfolded" uses a mallet, a bow, and pizzacato to employ many extended techniques throughout the piece.  Although there is almost a main theme, it does not rely on it to hold the work together, and instead uses timbre, technique, and phrasing.  The name comes from the composer feeling outside of his comfort zone, unsure if the decisions that he made would come off convincingly in a performance, but diving in despite of it, much like running blindfolded.
