Have it Both Ways was commissioned and premiered by Lauren Perala. It contains sections where the viola must line up exactly with the fixed media part and sections where the viola is more free to move within the steady tempo that the fixed media inherently provides. These two roles that the violist must perform in became the inspiration for the work, and the led to its title.
