Gone was commissioned by Benjamin Stayner in the summer of 2018. It is inspired by the American folk song, He's Gone Away, as heard on an old phonograph. The melodic content is a variation and embellishment of the main melody. The bowing on the bridge mimics the hissing of old records, while the tapping on the body of the cello mimics the popping. Pitch bends in the melody are inspired by the brief slowing of the speed of playback resulting in a lowering of the pitch of the record.
